What is Mindfulness?
Mindfulness or being present in the moment is becoming a popular way to regulate anxiety and stress. Being mindful requires a person to be fully present in the moment. John Hopkins completed a study that determined that after practicing mindfulness for 8 weeks it was effective for treating anxiety, stress, and depression.
Mindfulness Apps: Anxiety, Stress, & Depression Reduction
ADHD Trainer is a cognitive tool for children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. It works to help them develop focus and memory concepts with the help of games.
Calm has many different features. It helps teens learn to practice meditation and has “Sleep Stories” that help users fall asleep easier. It has a special section “Calm Kids.” I have used this app with adults for years and parents may find this app useful as well.
Meditation app with a kid friendly option. There are 5 themes: Calm, Focus, Sleep, and Wake up. The app can be customized for 3 age groups and the bonus is that parents can use the app to practice mindfulness with their child.
This app helps those with worries and challenges negative thoughts. Teens can choose meditations based on what is bothering them. This could include: low self esteem, fear, assertiveness and courage.
This app helps with both breathing and visualizations experiences. Teens can learn to breathing techniques to use at school, with friends, during sports, or anytime they are feeling scared.
Treating Anxiety, Stress, & Depression
Which one do you pick? I would recommend picking one or two apps and trying them out to see if you and your teen like the content. I prefer apps that allow me to try out their content and then upgrade once I need new material, but that is just me. What are your thoughts?
